At Bangor Medical Aesthetics, we understand that weight management is more than just a number on the scale — it's about protecting your long-term health, preserving muscle mass, and reversing the effects of chronic inflammation and metabolic imbalances.
Obesity and “Inflam-Ageing”: Understanding the Hidden Threat
One of the most overlooked — yet critical — factors in aging and chronic disease is “Inflam-ageing”, a condition of persistent low-grade inflammation that contributes to faster biological aging, tissue breakdown, and disease development.
Obesity is one of the most common and preventable causes of inflam-ageing.
That’s because excess fat tissue — especially visceral fat stored around the organs — is not just an energy reserve. It's an active inflammatory organ that releases harmful cytokines and disrupts your immune, hormonal, and metabolic systems. These inflammatory signals:
Unchecked, visceral fat leads to a cascade of obesity-related complications, including:
But here's the empowering truth: with expert guidance, these risks can be reversed.

PDRN, or Polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a biopolymer derived from marine and plant sources, particularly from the DNA of salmon sperm. It has garnered attention in medical fields due to its potential therapeutic properties, especially in regenerative medicine and wound healing.
Origin: The extraction of PDRN is primarily from the sperm of salmon, where it is obtained through a process that includes the enzymatic breakdown of DNA. This results in a mixture of nucleotides that can influence biological processes.
The choice of salmon sperm for production is due to the ease of production and purification processes, however the final polynucleotides structure is universal in the nature, and identical with the human DNA and RNA fragments.
1. Wound Healing: PDRN is known to stimulate dermal fibroblast proliferation and enhance angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), which can accelerate the healing process of wounds.
2. Skin Regeneration: In dermatology, PDRN is used in formulations for skin rejuvenation and anti-aging treatments. It helps with skin elasticity and hydration and may improve the overall appearance of the skin.
3. Tissue Repair: PDRN plays a role in tissue repair and regeneration, particularly in musculoskeletal health. It has been investigated for its effects on conditions like osteoarthritis, where it may help promote cartilage repair.
4. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: There is evidence suggesting that PDRN can exert anti-inflammatory effects, making it useful in treating inflammatory conditions.
5. In Surgery: PDRN can be used in surgical settings to enhance recovery by promoting tissue healing following procedures.
6. Potential in Chronic and Degenerative Diseases: Some studies are exploring PDRN's potential benefits in managing chronic conditions by promoting tissue regeneration and improving healing responses.
Polynucleotides, including compounds like Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) and Deoxyribonucleotide (DN), have gained increasing popularity in aesthetic medicine due to their regenerative properties and ability to promote skin health. Here are some key aspects of their use in this field:
1. Skin Rejuvenation:
2. Wound Healing:
3. Anti-Aging Treatments:
4. Enhancing Injectables:
5. Hair Restoration:
Polynucleotides work at a cellular level to promote regeneration. They influence various biological processes, such as:
Polynucleotides are available in various formulations for direct application or injection, including:
Polynucleotide treatments ( widely known in social media as “salmon DNA “ ) are generally considered extremely safe, with a very low incidence of adverse effects. As a natural substances widely available in the human body polynucleotides are highly unlikely to produce any significant problems.
However, the effectiveness can vary based on individual types and conditions. As with any aesthetic procedure, it is important for patients to consult qualified professionals and to discuss potential benefits and specific treatments available for your particular needs.
At Bangor medical aesthetics we offer a wide range of polynucleotide based treatments.
We will provide you after the consultation with information about how polynucleotides treatment can help achieve your desired outcome.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease with a tendency to worsen over time, characterized by articular cartilage degradation, subchondral damage and bone remodelling, most commonly affecting weight-bearing joints such as the knee and hip. The aim of OA treatment is to control symptoms until the severity of the condition mandates surgical intervention; an early therapy may be a vital step for delaying the progression to end-stage disease.
Joint injections can help reduce joint pains particularly when pain due to osteoarthritis. In our doctor-led clinic, we specialize in providing advanced joint and periarticular joint injections, providing personalised treatment plans and compassionate care, to help you regain mobility and relieve the pain.
Benefits
• Physician-led clinic for superior care
• Tailored treatment plans for your unique needs
• Proven results in pain relief and mobility improvement
• Patient-centred approach for your comfort and satisfaction,
• Each patient has a comprehensive clinical assessment prior the procedure
Types of injection offered
1. Corticosteroid injections
2. Polyribodeoxynucleotide (PDRN) injections
Corticosteroid injections:
Intra-articular injection of corticosteroids is the most common conservative approach in the treatment of ostearthitis. The rationale behind its use relies on its immunosuppressive activity in the knee joint and anti-inflammatory activity. However, it is important to note that repeated injections of intra-articular glucocorticoids over a long period of time can lead to cartilage loss. There is an increased risk of complications if surgery is needed after steroid injections.
Their use is suggested for short-term pain relief.
Hyaluronic injections:
Intra-articular short linked Hyaluronic acid, which is used for visco-supplementation in the synovial joint, is commonly used for long-term treatments as it is associated with symptom improvement beyond 12 weeks.
The downside is the need for repeated injections as the effects are short lived, however it demonstrated a more favourable safety profile than repeated corticosteroids
Crosslinked Hyaluronic acid has longer effects, however it is associated with pseudo-septic reactions and an increased risk of local adverse reactions (painful swelling and redness)
Polyribodeoxynucleotide (PDRN) injections:
Intra-articular polyribodeoxynucleotide (PDRN) injections are employed as an alternative of intra-articular administration of visco-supplementation over the past decade. These products have a long safety record and were approved in Europe since 2010.
PDRN is composed by polymers of various chain lengths capable of binding large amounts of water molecules, and induce a physiologic change by binding to water, forming a 3D gel, and releasing oligonucleotides when naturally degraded.
Being highly viscoelastic due to its large molecular weight and water-binding capacity, PDRN functions through both non-pharmacological and pharmacological mechanisms, including collagen production, tissue regeneration and inflammation reduction via adenosine A (2A) receptor stimulation.
PRDN also offers mechanical protection towards the damaged cartilage, replacing the synovial fluid and restoring an ideal microenvironment for matrix production, ultimately producing faster improvement of daily living activities compared to Hyaluronic acid.
It makes it an ideal treatment for relieving pain and inflammation, and it may it help in the long term with cartilage and joint repair.

Trochanteric bursa injections
Sacroliac joint injections
Carpal tunnel
De Quervain tendinitis

The anti-wrinkle jab Botox may help treat rosacea, the chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects one in ten people at some point. Rosacea causes facial redness mainly in the forehead, cheeks, chin and nose.
The toxin may stop blood vessels dilating, and thus reduce the characteristic red, flushed skin, a Rosacea occurs when tiny blood vessels in the skin of the face dilate and become visible — known as telangiectasia; in severe cases, skin can thicken and swell, usually around the nose.
The cause is not fully understood. Treatments that can help minimise the symptoms include antibiotic tablets or gels and creams that have anti-inflammatory effects. But these do not work for all patients.
New studies show that botulinum toxin, which is widely used in cosmetic procedures and to treat an increasing number of medical conditions, including chronic migraines, can be effective in rosacea, too. s well as tackling inflammation. One theory is that with rosacea it targets compounds in the skin, which in turn stops blood vessels dilating. It may also block immune cells that are involved in the inflammatory response that worsens the condition.
At Bangor medical aesthetics we offer microbotox as mesotherapy or injections ( also together with hyaluronic acid ) for facial rejuvenation and for rosacea treatment.
In the early days of non-surgical medical aesthetics, the tendency was to “chase lines,” treating laugh lines with dermal fillers and reducing frown lines with Botox.
This may have helped a few to look more rested, but it also created many “flat faces” and did not serve the best interests for everyone.
As the field of medical aesthetics evolved and as understanding the aging process, most experienced medical aesthetic physicians adopted a broader approach when treating their patients.
Volume loss and dynamic wrinkles in the upper, middle and lower thirds of the face are now precisely addressed. Temples, cheeks and chin areas are individually treated as well. This results in a significant improvement in the restoration of youthful facial curves, volume and shape.
Leonardo da Vinci, one of the world’s most celebrated thinkers, insisted that there was a mathematical basis for beauty. Many of his artistic creations, such as the Mona Lisa were based on specific ratios . Over the centuries, many of the world’s greatest minds, including Galileo, Michelangelo, and Einstein, were in awe of the fact that inherent beauty appears to be dependent on a proportion known as the Golden Ratio.
The Renaissance artists, for example, referred to it as the “Divine Proportion.” Today, we see these exact proportions on famous people like Halle Berry, Jessica Simpson, Pierce Brosnan and Tom Cruise.
The Golden Ratio is expressed mathematically as 1.618:1 and is commonly referred to by the Greek letter Phi. Golden Ratios are found throughout the beautiful face. Phi defines the beautiful brow, ideal facial width, and the shape of the lips, regardless of ethnicity. Perhaps our perception of beauty is hardwired in our “computer brains” and based on how closely one’s features reflect Phi in their proportions.
Recent studies have demonstrated that we all have similar subjective beliefs about what constitutes beauty, regardless of our race, ethnicity or upbringing. It only takes a millisecond for humans to assess a person’s facial features and make a decision as to whether are subjectively and physically beautiful. We analyse their features, contours, skin quality and shapes.
Dr Arthur Swift , which is behind the concept of BeautiPhication ,created what he called the “Magnificent Seven.” These are the seven features we assess within milliseconds of meeting someone:
Changes to several of these features could lead a person to perceive a person to be 15 years younger than their actual age.
This standard of beauty is in fact attainable, and not only by surgery. At Bangor Medical Aesthetics we use non-surgical ways to achieve this standard. We use combination of wrinkle reduction injections ( Botox), a large variety of fillers ( each specially designed for different regions of the face or body ) , PDO and PLA Threads lift , as well as treatments designed to improve skin clarity/texture and colour like ProfHilo, mesotherapy, HIFU and radiofrequency machine. To read full article please click here
Why obesity is also a major Risk for COVID 19 infections:
While the definition of obesity is a BMI over 30 , there is increasing evidence that this is not so simple.
Distribution of fat is as important, with upper body fat and visceral( abdominal fat ) having a negative impact on health. Different ethnicities have different distribution of fat making some more susceptible for disease at a lower Weight and BMI than others. The classic example is the metabolic syndrome with insulin resistance, diabetes and arteriosclerotic vascular and heart disease. However a less known but widely research area is the involvement of this, bad fat in inducing inflammation and other diseases like cancer and dementia.
The new COVID pandemic has put again the questions about the impact of obesity on immunity and inflammatory responses.
Inflammation is a sign of the body's natural response to infection. When the immune system is mobilised, the flurry of activity by defensive cells causes by-products such as heat and skin redness, or fever when the whole system is involved. But it is less known that obesity and chronic disease also trigger inflammation.
Overweight people — almost two out of three Britons fall into this group — have been shown to have higher levels of inflammatory messenger molecules called cytokines, which interfere with and damage normal cell.
Obesity and the health problems associated with it — such as high blood pressure, raised blood sugar levels and tummy fat — have a 'substantial impact' on the health of the immune system and defence against disease.
People with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 don't produce antibody cells in response to vaccination against infectious diseases such as flu, tetanus and hepatitis because their immune systems are already not working properly.
As a result, those people are not protected by the vaccines.
Millions of Britons are living with conditions linked to inflammation.
While obesity is the main cause of this and other chronic health problems — typically type 2 diabetes and heart disease, which also damage the body's maintenance systems, including immunity — other conditions where inflammation is implicated include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where stored fat clogs up the liver (this affects an estimated one adult in three) and dementia, which is often a complication of heart disease and diabetes.
The inflammation triggered by the continuing fight against all these chronic illnesses — one Briton in three is thought to be suffering simultaneously with more than one such illness — means those affected are battling to maintain their vital functions even before any contact with Covid-19, which then triggers an extra defensive inflammatory response.
As a review published last week in the journal Nature highlighted, 'an excessive inflammatory response... is thought to be a major cause of disease severity and death in patients with Covid-19'.
Covid-19 is a new infection and an understanding of how it works is still emerging, but many doctors now see the devastating number of deaths in the UK as a wake-up call about chronic disease and the underlying issue of inflammation.
A healthier immune system reaction would mean reduced levels of inflammation.
Cutting back on processed food, exercising and sleeping well are the lifestyle approaches to achieving this.
Bangor Medical Aesthetics will soon offer consultations and therapy for overweight.
The therapy will be supervised by experienced GP with special interest in metabolic syndrome and weight reduction.
During the COVID 19 epidemic we will offer video consultations and home delivery of medication if needed.
There are different types of threads used in aesthetics:
1.PDO Threads
The most used threads in Europe .This are the most used threads also by Bangor Medical Aesthetics . Are the safest and have the least side effects and most reliable for first time use.
PDO thread is bioabsorbable suture made with synthetic molecule called Polydioxanone. Polydioxanone suture provides wound support for longer period as compared to other synthetic absorbable sutures. Polydioxanone suture also offers far superior tensile strength. Polydioxanone suture is made from polymerizing para dioxanone monomer.
Absorption of suture is by simple hydrolysis within 180 days from implantation day. The duration of effects are more than one year due to the continued effects of the induced collagen production in the body.
Absorption of polydioxanone suture is very reliable and predictable. This material is used in surgery and aesthetics for many years .

At Bangor medical Aesthetics we are pleased to be able to offer you Allergan's latest hyaluronic acid injectable gel using the patented VYCROSS® technology and specifically formulated to restore and create volume.
Juvéderm® VOLUX allows us to sculpt the cheek, chin and jaw area, giving facial definition that can last for up to 18–24 months.
According to research 51% (n=1,707) of people want to reshape their chin or jawline.,
In April 2019, Allergan plc (NYSE: AGN) – launched Juvéderm®VOLUX at the 17th Aesthetic & Anti-Aging World Congress (AMWC) in Monaco. Juvéderm® VOLUX represents the latest innovation in Allergan's extensive range of Juvéderm® facial fillers. Juvéderm®VOLUX contains hyaluronic acid (HA) and uses the unique patented VYCROSS® technology. The product has been specially formulated to restore and create volume in the chin and jaw area for up to 18-24 months.
As we get older, several factors can contribute to how the lower face ages including genetics, soft tissue and bone structure changes, repetitive facial expressions and environmental elements.
Many people start to lose definition around the chin, neck and jawline area, often changing the shape of the face.
Interestingly, Allergan research shows that 51% (n = 870) of people want to change their lower face shape. In other research, women report the ideal lower face shape is a symmetrical, 'oval' shape with good proporation, which provides a defined jaw line with clear definition between the neck and chin area.
"Our face shape changes as we age: skin begins to thin and lose its plumpness, while drooping soft tissue can lead to the appearance of jowls,"
"Until now, non-invasive treatment options for the lower face have been limited. Juvéderm® VOLUX is the perfect solution for patients who want a more defined look around the lower face without having to resort to surgery - the gel enables us to restore volume so that the jawline appears tauter and more defined."
The importance of facial definition
Consumer research shows that 7 in 10 (70% / n = 17,929)π of people care about the way their face looks, and according to many experts the appearance of the lower face can play an important role in our perceived facial attractiveness.
Beauty is often described using three key tenets: symmetry, balance and harmony. Some women describe the ideal lower face shape as a defined jawline and a firm, toned chin.
Juvéderm® VOLUX, a structural gel, now provides a better treatment option for those want to define the chin and jawline areas.
Results with Juvéderm® VOLUX
In a trial Juvéderm® VOLUX delivered high satisfaction with 95% of patients (n = 85) reporting they were satisfied with the results three months after treatment. The setup of this study was unique as the primary goal was to evaluate the mean change in facial angle from baseline compared with a control group. At 18 months, 62% of patients (n = 79) still felt their results were positive.
Like all other facial filler products we use at Bangor Medical Aesthetics, Juvéderm® VOLUX contains lidocaine for a more comfortable treatment experience.
Juvéderm® VOLUX clinical study showing duration beyond 18 months after initial treatment or initial + top-up treatment in the chin and jaw, as well as clinical results showing 24 month duration in the mid-face established Juvéderm® VOLUX as having an in situ duration of 18–24 months.
The fillers work by restoring lost volume in the face, filling lines and wrinkles and hydrating skin with results that can last from 9-24 months, depending on the treatment chosen.
HA is an ingredient known to moisture the skin, helping return its elasticity and tone to produce natural, healthy-looking skin.
